You probably spent a bunch of time preparing for moving day, and followed your moving house checklist step-by-step to ensure a stress-free move.

But now you’ve moved in, what’s next?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We’ve compiled the ultimate list of things to do after moving into a new house.

You’ll be settled in and calling your house a home in no time!

13 Things To Do After Moving Into A New House

  1. Relax

Relax?! You’re probably thinking there’s no time at all for any relaxation.

But moving day can be hard. So take some time to relax and explore your new home.

Don’t get too comfy though, you’ve still got some work to do!

  1. Make Sure Your Utilities Are Up & Running

If you followed our moving house checklist correctly, this shouldn’t be a problem for you! But just in case, check all the utilities are working properly. The main ones being electricity, gas and water. You might want to make sure the cable and internet are up and running too.

This is also a great time to locate your fuse box and main water valve. You never know when you’ll randomly lose power or water. So save yourself from frantically searching for the fuse box or main water valve when that time comes.

  1. Clean Your House

Before you start wildly unpacking, it’s always a good idea to give your new house a quick clean. That way, you can get to all those hard to reach spots that won’t see much cleaning once everything is unpacked and in place.

If you’re after a more thorough cleaning, Gentle Giant Removals & Relocations offer cleaning services from a professional whisk through to a complete sanitised clean.

  1. Unpack the Essentials

It would take a mighty effort to unpack everything on your first day, so it’s best to start off by making sure your essential boxes are unpacked first.

Hopefully you have your essential boxes labelled, but if not, be on the lookout for boxes with bedding and bathroom items. Having your bed assembled and ready to sleep in is super important, because then you have somewhere comfy to crash whenever you get tired and call it a day.

And you’ll also want to have your toiletries, towels and shower items all ready for when you decide to take a well-deserved shower!

However, if you’re in a rush and need everything unpacked ASAP, our removalists can provide full or partial unpacking services to speed up the process.

  1. Safety, Safety, Safety

One of the most important actions to take after moving into a new house is to make sure it’s safe and secure. Here’s a quick run-down of things you can do to make your home as safe as it can be:

  • Change the locks – this way you know you’re the only ones with access to your new home.
  • Secure the windows – double check you have no dodgy windows that don’t close properly or could be easily broken into.
  • Install smoke detectors – make sure you have new and functional smoke detectors in every room.
  • Purchase a fire extinguisher – it’s always smart to have at least one on hand. Better safe than sorry!
  • Go overboard on first-aid supplies – ensure you have a proper first-aid kit and lots of supplies to deal with any unwelcome injuries.
  • Devise an escape plan – everyone should be aware of the escape plan out of the house in case of emergency.
  • Install a security system – having your home fitted with a good quality security camera system will help put your mind at ease.
  • Childproof your home – if there are any rugrats running around the house, make sure they are as safe as possible! This means getting sharp objects and medicine out of reach, putting safety guards up on stairs and removing any other potential household hazards.
  1. Hook Up Your Major Appliances

If your fridge, washing machine, dishwasher or any other major appliance made the move with you, now is the perfect time to get them connected.

Most importantly, you’ll want to have your refrigerator up and running so you can start stocking it with goodies. But be careful, don’t rush to plug in your fridge once you have it in the kitchen! They need roughly 3 hours to sit upright and allow the oils to settle into place.

  1. Unpack Some More

It’s time to get back to all those other boxes that you’ve left unpacked!

Start filling out the other rooms in your house so it doesn’t feel so empty.

  1. Find out When Bin Collection Day Is

It might seem unimportant, but with all the empty boxes and other rubbish you’ve acquired from the big move, your bins will likely be overflowing come bin day.

That’s why you need to find out when bin collection day is, so you can have your bins out the night before and avoid getting stuck with a full bin and nowhere to put your rubbish!

If you’ve moved to the Central Coast, you can head here and simply search your new address to see when the next collection day is.

  1. Change Your Address

Speaking of your address, don’t forget to change it!

By visiting Service NSW, you can quickly change your address on important things such as your driver’s licence and car rego.

And make sure you tell your friends and family your new address too. It’s important they know where they can reach you and where to go when you throw an awesome housewarming party!

  1. Find Your Go-To Local Spots

Everyone has their favourite local spots. If you have moved to a new suburb or city you’re going to have to find some new ones.

Of course there’s the main ones like a good school for you kids and a local GP. But sometimes the hardest spots to find can be for more simple things, like a nice cafe for your morning coffee or a hairdresser that always has you looking sharp.

  1. Decorate

Finally. Time for the fun stuff!

Put your self-proclaimed exquisite taste to the test and transform your house into a home. New furniture, new colours, perhaps a fancy artwork or two?

Release your inner interior designer and have fun with it. It’s your home now, so make every room a place you love living.

  1. Meet Your Neighbours

Don’t be shy, introduce yourself to a few of your neighbours! They’ll probably have some much needed guidance and advice to give you that will help you settle into your new area.

Make a few friends and before you know it, you’ll be the life of the street Christmas party.

  1. Relax Again

Well done! You’re all settled in.

Relax and enjoy your new home. You deserve it.
