Moving house in 2023 is a big undertaking and can be stressful, but there are some things you should do and others that you shouldn’t.

When the big day comes around, you’ll want to know what to do and what to avoid. So take a look at the do’s and don’ts of moving house in 2023 below!

Do…

Make a checklist!

Making a checklist is an easy way to keep on top of things during the moving process. This will help you to ensure that everything that needs to be done is done, and nothing is forgotten.

Get packing as soon as possible!

The earlier you start packing, the less stressful it will be. Follow a plan (like our ultimate packing guide) to ensure all your packing is completed in time, and you’re not frantically packing last minute.

However, make sure you’re not packing things too early. You’ll need some essentials to be unpacked so you can get by during your last few days in your old house.

Factor in extra time!

Moving house is not normally a simple process, and things are bound to go wrong, so it is important to take this into account when planning your move. Give yourself plenty of time to get everything done, and be prepared for any potential problems.

Take care of the little things!

When moving house it is easy to get caught up in the bigger picture and forget about some important details. These can include changing your mailing address details, doing a final sweep of your old house to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything, or even checking your smoke alarms are working in your new home.

Check the weather

Moving homes can be a stressful process, and moving in the rain can make things even more stressful. If it’s possible to schedule your move day ahead of time, consider checking the weather is dry and cool prior, to prevent the risk of injuries or damaging belongings.

Take a break!

As mentioned earlier, moving house can be very stressful. This is why it is important to take some time out during the moving process to unwind.

Don’t…

Overload yourself with unnecessary stress!

Stress is not good for your health and nor will it help you to move house. Make sure that you are moving at a pace that suits the situation, don’t push yourself too hard trying to get everything done quickly! So, as we said above, try and take some time out for yourself during the moving process, especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Forget to pack essentials!

When packing up your boxes, it is important not to forget the essentials that we mentioned we’d pack last earlier. As you’ll be needing them when you first arrive at your new property. This includes items such as a change of clothes, toiletries and bedding.

Throw away everything!

It is tempting to get rid of all your belongings when you move house. And by all means, it’s probably time to let a few things go. But many items that we tend to dispose of can actually go a long way in helping us out with moving day: such as old towels, clothes hangers and even shoes!

Leave packing until the last minute!

If you are leaving packing until the last minute then you are asking for trouble. Not only will this add unnecessary stress to an already busy time, but it could also lead to you forgetting important items. Start packing up your belongings well in advance to avoid any potential problems.

Forget to budget for moving costs!

Moving house can be expensive, so it is important that you factor in all the associated costs. This includes things such as hiring a removal company, purchasing packing materials and even food and drink for the day.
